In recent years, the fastest growing means of protecting land has been through the use of conservation easements, a legal agreement between a private landowner and a land trust that permanently limits the scope and type of development while leaving the land in private ownership.

In 1971 the Hannan Foundation constructed Hannan House as a residence for low income seniors. Although Hannan House offered high quality affordable housing in the heart of Detroit's Midtown University Cultural and Medical Center Area as subsidized senior apartment buildings were built in the area surrounding Hannan House the need for its single room, home for the aged, units decreased significantly. In response to declining occupancy Hannan conferred with non-profit senior service providers and surveyed seniors in Detroit to determine the best use for the building. This resulted in the decision by Hannan in 1993 to adaptively reuse the 45,000 square foot, four story (five levels) building by converting it into a multi tenant nonprofit center.

The clinic will treat persons from 18 through 64 years of age. It will provide primarily non-emergency maintenance care of chronic illness, do checkups, diagnose and treat acute day-to-day illness, dispense generic medications, and make specialist referrals for obstetric, dental care and sexually transmitted disease treatment and other care beyond our scope of service. The pharmacy will not stock any controlled drugs, narcotics or any highly addictive drug of any sort.We can't hope to offer this needed service without volunteers. All free clinics are staffed by people who volunteer. There are state and Federal government legal protections for medical staff that volunteer.
