 Our Mission:

The mission of the Church of the Messiah Housing Corporation is to engage in housing, community and economic development activities to improve the quality of life in the lower eastside of Detroit.

Our Vision:

We envision a strong, safe, self-sustaining community where quality, affordable, housing and employment opportunities as well as business enterprises exist. An area thatis well maintained, with a strong sense of community, making this a Neighborhood of Choice for the residents of the City of Detroit.

Our Core Values:

We promise to always operate with:

  • Integrity
  • Honesty
  • Compassion
  • Community
  • Empowerment

Restoring a Holistic Sense of Community:

Church of the Messiah Housing Corporation was incorporated in 1978 and was one of the first community development corporations in the nation. It was established to confront the extensive deterioration and demolition of housing within the Islandview neighborhood of the lower east side of Detroit. This was a community whose souland sense of place remained intact. Our main focus has been to stabilize the neighborhood through the rehabilitation and operational management of multi-unit apartment buildings and the construction of single family homes, rental townhouses, ans apartment buildings.

Church of the Messiah Housing Corporation has historically been one of Detroit's most prolific housing developers. The Bellevue Village Project was the first single family construction in the area after fifty years.

Working with funders, community development corporations, the philanthropic community, and dedicated residents, Detroit LISC rebuilds communities from the ground up. Through a comprehensive Sustainable Communities approach to neighborhood revitalization, Detroit LISC and its partners are committed to turning distress into success.

LISC is committed to building communities that offer the positive environments needed to ensure that all residents of any income level are provided the opportunities and tools to build assets, to participate in the benefits of their communities, and to become part of the mainstream economy.

We are calling these places Sustainable Communities. They are, in effect, the embodiment of both “community” and “development” — places where human opportunity and social and economic vitality combine with a continuous process of growth, adaptation, and improvement. We envision Sustainable Communities as places that people want to be in, contribute to, thrive in, and be proud of. Sustainable Communities are good places to live, do business, work, worship, and raise families.

Formerly known as the Michigan Interfaith Trust Fund (Trust Fund), the Opportunity Resource Fund is celebrating 25 years of working for social and economic justice. Supporting Michigan’s communities via the creation of decent and affordable housing, jobs and great commercial spaces, we are a catalyst for positive change.  The new name and logo reflect our reenergized commitment to the mission and values we have lived since our inception in 1985.

With our new name and logo, the Opportunity Resource Fund seeks to reach even more communities. The purpose, while updated to incorporate a larger audience, continues to accept loans and investments from individuals and organizations to provide these funds to those denied traditional access to capital.

Our Mission -
The Opportunity Resource Fund provides loans, through careful and flexible resource allocation, to benefit Michigan communities.

Our Community Vision –
Where others see dilapidated houses,
……we envision homes restored to provide shelter for generations of families.

Where others see empty, broken storefronts,
……we envision the realization of the entrepreneurial dreams of successful small businesses which will create jobs.

Where others see hopelessness and overwhelming problems,
……we envision new and renovated facilities through which nonprofits can better serve their communities.

Today MCHR is still strong and its membership continues to focus on MCHR's mission to educate, organize and advocate on behalf of human rights. We oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and have re-committed ourselves to working for enduring peace in the world. Abayomi Azikiwe, MCHR Chair, sees a "renewed need for MCHR to focus on a recommitment to the democratic process." This year's national elections are "an invitation to begin the slow and arduous process of correcting the domestic social ills and foreign policy quagmires."
