1515 Broadway is primarily a space that the local community uses for artistic expression, be it theatre, poetry slams, dance parties or meetings. The concept is the "black box" and its 115 chairs can be arranged (or removed) to suit the need. Chris Jaszczak really is a genuine unsung hero of the city of Detroit, stubbornly and magnificently holding to his vision of a neighborhood commons that enables all kinds of creative expression. More recently 1515 has added a coffee house/cafe in the front and in the warm months, on the street. The expresso is excellent, food and muffins well chosen and the tables and chairs an odd assortment of found items. Most coffee houses try hard to affect a sense of authentic boho vibe, 1515 is the real deal and far more.
